The surrounding line shows a kernel density estimate (bandwidth of 40); this is a non-parametric estimate of the underlying density of the data (each data-point is in effect ‘blurred’ and so contributes to a range of points that make up the line; the more data-points at a given orientation, the greater the bulge of the line).
